Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Pain

Physiotherapy For Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Pain

Many people experience pain in their elbows, wrists, and hands that prevent them from being able to enjoy life to the fullest.  Whether your pain is from a bad fall, overuse injury in sports, or poor ergonomics, physiotherapy can help reduce your pain.

Sub-Conditions

Tennis Elbow

What It Is
Tennis elbow is a very common injury to the outside part of the elbow. It can be caused by many activities other than tennis. It is most often caused by overuse of the tendon that controls the muscles on the back of the forearm.

How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapists reduce tension in the muscles that are impacting the tendon with manual therapy. They reduce inflammation in the tendon with ultrasound. Use electrical stimulation to reduce pain. And rebuild strength and flexibility in the muscle with exercise and stretches. We will also assess the rest of your arm, your posture, and your specific work activities.

Golfers Elbow

What It Is
Golfer’s elbow is a common injury to the inside part of the elbow that can be caused by many activities other than golf. It is most often caused by overuse of the tendon that controls the muscles on the front of the forearm.

We will also assess the rest of your arm, your grip, and your lifting technique.

Trigger Finger

What It Is
Trigger finger is a painful condition in the hand when a nodule develops on the tendon.  The nodule then gets stuck between ligaments in your finger and will commonly cause the finger to lock or get stuck.

How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapists aid in breaking up scar tissue in the tendon with manual therapy. Reducing inflammation with ultrasound. And use progressive exercises and stretching to restore normal mobility in the tendon.

Tendinitis

What It Is
Tendinitis is a term that refers to a tendon becoming inflamed.  This is often an overuse injury that can present in the elbow, wrist, and hand. It can also be present in other areas of the body.  Tendinitis may be caused by a traumatic injury or from overuse forces that have broken the tendon down over time.

How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapy can help by looking for ways to reduce overuse forces. We do this by examining your movement patterns. We can reduce local inflammation with ultrasound. Reduce pain with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). Help to increase flexibility with stretching, and increase tendon strength to prevent future injuries with progressive exercises

Thumb Tendinitis (DeQuervains)

What It Is
Thumb tendinitis is a condition that develops on the back of the thumb. It happens when protective tissue surrounding the tendon becomes inflamed. This is most often caused by overuse or poor lifting technique. We often see new moms develop this as they lift their growing baby, and with people who work with their hands.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

What It Is
Carpal tunnel syndrome is when a nerve (median nerve) in the wrist is getting compressed in the tunnel that it travels through at the front of your wrist. It commonly presents with numbness and tingling in the hands and fingers, especially felt at night.

How Physiotherapy Can Help
Physiotherapy can help by looking at workplace ergonomics. We will reduce inflammation in the carpal tunnel with ultrasound. And stretching will increase nerve mobility, and increase joint mobility in the wrist to relieve pressure on the nerve.
